Children
like to talk about their hobbies in their free time.
What is a hobby?
What hobbies do you know?
Look at the pictures and say
what things people usually collect.
Which of these proverbs can we
refer to the title of the lesson?
A wolf in sheep’s clothing.
Easier said than done.
Never to late to learn.
Tastes differ.
To play with fire.
Match the following English
proverbs with the Russian equivalents.
A wolf in sheep’s clothing. Играть с огнем.
Easier said than done. Учиться никогда не
поздно.
Never to late to learn. Волк в овечьей шкуре.
Tastes differ. О
вкусах не спорят.
To play with fire. Легче сказано, чем сделано.
Reading
Helen
likes writing letters. She says she’s never bored with it. It’s interesting for
her to hear news from her pen pals.
Here
is one of her letters.
1. What hobby does she write
about?
Before reading.
Pay attention how to write
letters.
Write the address in the top
right – hand corner of the first page. First comes the number of the house,
then the name of the street and the name of the town and the state. Write the
date under the address.
Look
at the greeting at the beginning of the letter. It’s "Dear Maria”. And the ending
of the letter is "Remember me to your parents
Love, Helen ”.

Dear Maria,
I’m sorry I haven’t written so long. I was very busy last
month but now school is over and I can write a letter to you. Things are going
well for me. I’m learning a lot in my French class and I feel better about
speaking French now. Last night I think I even spoke French when I was
sleeping! But I still have some problems, you know.
In your last letter you asked me to write a few words about
my hobbies. Well, I’m fond of reading. It’s very exciting. I’ve got a very good
collection of books at home and I’m really proud of it. I can’t say my
collection is thematic. I’ve got different books: fiction and historical
novels. I’ve got many books about animals and birds. I also have books which
can tell you about different countries and lands. I think many people can say
that their hobby is reading and I am sure it is easy to explain why. We learn
when we read books.
Whatever you do, wherever you go, you’ll always need a true
friend and a good teacher. This friend and the teacher for you is the book.
I’ve already read many books. Some of them are very interesting indeed; some
are boring. Some of them are easy to read, and some are difficult to
understand. But I usually read all of them up to the end. As I have already
said my collection of books at home is good, but I often go to the library and
take books to read there. My favorite books are about animals.
Now I really think I’m finishing. Sorry for such a long
letter!
Remember me to your parents
Love, Helen
2. Do you agree or disagree
with each statement. Prove your point of view using the text.
Helen is learning English.
She has got detective stories in
her library at home.
Her favorite books are historical
novels.
Helen doesn’t go to the
library.
She has written a long letter
to Maria.
3. Helen
has her own opinion about books.
Does Helen’s opinion justify
yours? Finish the following sentences.
When we read books we…
Books are your… and…
Some of the books are… but
some of them are…
Some of the books are…, some
are…
4. Here
are two poems: the first poem is by Adelaide Love and the second one is by J.
Jamroz.
What are these poems about?
Could Helen write the same
about her hobbies?
A book, I think, is very like Everybody has a hobby
A little golden door, And we’ve got a
common one.
That takes me into places English does attract us
Where I’ve never been before. More than stamps and actors.
It leads me into fairyland And, it is great fun!
Or countries strange and far. Learning English, learning
English,
And, best of all, the golden
door That’s the hobby that we
share.
Always stands ajar. We are fond of
learning English
Which is spoken everywhere.
(by Adelaide Love) (
by J. Jamroz.)
3. How many hobbies has Helen
really got? What are they? Why do you think so? (reading books, writing
letters, learning foreign languages: English, French ).
4. What words of the poems can
you use to give titles?
Pre – listening
British
children often write letters to different newspapers and magazines.
Who could write this letter: a
boy or a girl?
Before listening guess:
Formula 1
a) a pop group b) motor racing c) a shop
2) Fernando Alonso
a) a film star b) a famous football player c) a driver
IV. Listening
1. While listening tick
hobbies:
football, theatre, motor cars,
reading, collecting stamps, music.
(Hi, my name is Jack and) I’m going to talk to you about my
hobbies. I’m interested in motor cars. My brother, Nick, has a car and I like
to help him in the garage. By the way I enjoy watching motor racing. I’m really
into Formula 1. My favorite driver is Fernando Alonso.
I’m fond of collecting stamps. It’s relaxing. I have about a
hundred stamps from different countries. I have got a favorite stamp. This is a
stamp of Elvis Presley. He was a famous rock-n-roll singer. We call him "The
King” of rock-n-roll! I keep my stamps on the walls of my room. My father
travels a lot and sometimes he brings stamps to me. This summer he is going to
China.
I also like listening to music. I don’t really have a
favorite group or a singer. If the music is good, I don’t care if it’s rock,
pop or heavy metal. I’m not interested in anyone special.
Choose and read aloud the
sentences which are true to the letter.
Jack has a car.
He is really into Formula 1.
He is fond of driving cars.
His hobby is collecting
stamps.
He likes listening to Elvis
Presley.
V. Post – listening
