Dystopia is a recently coined word to
describe negative utopias, and can
be taken literally to mean 'bad place'. In the 20th century dystopian
fiction dominates utopian fiction. There was a generally skeptical or
pessimistic view about science and technology among 20th century
writers. |
"Library is a temple of books”, -- somebody said. And I
fully agree
with these wise words. Every person in our country more than 14 years
old, I’m sure, at least once visited a library. The majority of young
people has subscriptions to the libraries they like. The libraries not
only give us a vast choice of books, but also offer excellent
opportunities of having rest. |
This school-year at our English outside reading lessons
we had read many
interesting stories about Robin Hood. The most interesting story is a
story about Golden Arrow. In the 11th century England was conquered by
the Normans who had come from the North of France. |
I've recently read a book which has made a
very deep impression on me.
It's called Gone with the Wind and it makes really unforgettable
reading. The author of the book is Margaret Mitchell. |
My favourite book is "The Old Man and the Sea" by Ernest
Hemingway. This
story is one of the well-known works of the writer. The author depicts
the characters of the old man and the boy and their relations very
vividly and skillfully. |
A book is one of the greatest wonders of world. Why are
so many people
fond of reading? The world of books is full of wonders. You and
characters of books can find yourselves in different countries and have a
lot of adventures. |
Contemporary life is impossible without reading. The
influence of
literature on people's mind is great. Regular reading enriches your
knowledge of the world and helps to form your entire personality. If a
book appeals to you, it arouses lots of feelings and emotions in your
heart. |
Libraries play an important role in the
cultural development of a
country. People have a desire to learn, they seek knowledge. Books
satisfy this desire.

Long ago ancient Greeks often waged wars.
Small states suffered and lost
much even if they did not take any side and stayed out of wars. The
ruler of such a small state, Elis, wanted to live in peace with all
neighbours. He was a good diplomat because his negotiations were
successful and Elis was recognized a neutral state. |
The English are great lovers of sport; and they are
neither playing
nor waching games, they like to talk about them. However, there is
important thing about sport in Britain which we must know. Today, the
big-time
sport is professional and famous players can make much money. |
People all over the world are very fond of sports and games. That is
one thing in which people of every nationality and class are united. The most popular outdoor winter sports are shooting, hunting, hockey and
in the countries where the weather is frosty and there is much
snow-skating, skiing and tobogganing.

Americans' interest in sports seems
excessive to many foreign visitors.
Television networks spend millions of dollars arranging to telecast
sports events. Publications about sports sell widely. In the US
professional athletes can become national heroes.

If you want to keep fit you
must go in for one kind of sport or another. Sport is an essential part of my
daily life. Every morning all
the year round I do my morning exercises.

A lot of Australians think you shouldn't worry too much about life. But some things in life are really
important, and to many
Australian men, one of these things is sport. It's something they don't
joke about.

There are many public houses in London
and elsewhere, where beer, wine
and spirits may be bought and drunk at certain times of the day. These
are suitable for all classes of the community and provide a place, where
people may meet together and talk, and perhaps play at darts or other
games, as well as drink. |
They say, "Health is above wealth." One
of the first duties we owe to
ourselves is to keep our bodies in perfect health. If your body suffers
from any disorder, our mind suffers with it, and we are unable to make
much progress in knowledge, and we are unfit to perform those duties,
which are required of us in social life.

Snowboarding is the fastest growing
winter sport and is set to become
even more popular than skiing. It is hard to say who actually "invented"
the first snowboard because it was influenced by many different people
including Sherman Poppen, Demetrije Milovich, Tom Sims and Jake Burton
Carpenter. Snowboarding's roots, however, may be traced back to the
early 1920's. |
Skiing is the most popular of all winter
sports. It is believed that
skiing comes from northern Europe and Siberia, where it was a vital
means of transportation during the long, snowbound months of winter. The
pre-historic people of these regions used skis to keep hunters on top
of the snow. |
The Olympic Games are one of the most
spectacular reminders of the debt
we owe to the Greeks.
The original Olympic Games were held
every four years in honour of
Zeus, the supreme god of Greek religion. |
Ice hockey is one of the most
action-paced of sports, demanding skillful
skating, expert stick-handling, and masterly puck control.

Extreme sports are nontraditional sports
and activities that require
participants to combine athletic skill with pronounced risk.
An extreme sport is a popular term for certain activities which have
a high level of danger. These activities often involve speed, height, a
high level of physical training. |
We often hear a saying "Don’t invent a
bicycle" about something simple
and known fora long time.
Really, the bicycle is old enough - more than a hundred years of age.
Its first prototype appeared in 1791 in France. In 1800 a Russian
peasant Artamonov made an iron bicycle and travelled on it from Nizhni
Tagil to Moscow.

My name’s Sola. I like doing many things
but one thing that I really like doing is playing chess.
Chess is an indoor and competitive game played between two players.
It is being played in tournaments, online or at home. The origin of
chess is traced to India of the 6th century during the Gupta Empire. |
In our time, life is not so interesting
and exciting as it can be. The
world has become a bland and safe place. Each day is like another and we
are so tired of such life. People in the past used to risk their life
by hunting animals, taking part in expeditions. |
abseits. |
In jeder Stadt
baut man neue Wohnhäuser. Man baut ganze Neubaubezirke
mit Wohnhäusern, Schulen, Kindergärten, Grünanlagen. Ich wohne auch im
Neubaubezirk, in einem neunstöckigen Wohnhaus. Meine Adresse ist: Lisova
4 (vier), Wohnung 14 (vierzehn). |
Jeder
Mensch wählt Filme nach seinem Geschmack aus. |
