Some time ago
some
newspaper reporter called the modem Earth "a world village". It really
means that year by year the earth is getting smaller with the
development of communication and increase in international trade. People
of different countries and nations have to get along well with the
progress in world trade and technology as well as with each other. |
London is the
capital of
Great Britain, its political, economic and commercial centre. It is one
of the largest cities in the world (together with Tokyo and New York)
and the largest city in Europe. The city is very old. It has more
then 20 centuries old history. |
There are
many famous
English writers. Among them are William Shakespeare, Keepling and many
others. I will tell you about the life and work of Arthur Conan Doyle
and Ian Fleming, because I like their books most of all. Ian Fleming is
the author of internationally famous James Bond spy novels. |
People live a
very busy
life nowadays, so they have little time to spare. Still they try their
best to make use of those rare hours of leisure. A hobby is a favorite
pastime of a person. Hobbies differ like tastes. |
There is no
place like
home. We connect many pleasant things with our home, our dearest people,
parents, friends, nature, gentle flowers, trees in the yard, our native
language and music, the first book read in the childhood, lively and
noisy games. That’s why we miss our home badly when we are away. |
Those who live in the
country like to find themselves in large cities with their shops,
cinemas, crowds of people. City-dwellers usually like a quiet holiday by
the sea or in the mountains with nothing to do but walking and bathing,
lazying in the sun. Most travelers and holiday makers take a camera
with them and take pictures of everything that interests them -
beautiful views of waterfalls, forests, unusual plants and animals.
These photos will remind them of the happy time of holiday. |
As we become
older we
realize that there are some things and places we always want to come
back. They are certainly our birthplace, our home and our school. We
will always remember our school and our teachers for the rest of our
lives. Generally speaking, children go to school at the age of 6-7. |
More and more
people
realize that every educated person should know a foreign language. The
most popular language now is English. English is a world language. It’s
the language of progressive science and technology, trade and cultural
relation, commerce and business. |
Great Britain
is famous
for its old traditions. Some of them existed in ancient times and
survived through centuries. Some of them appeared when Christianity came
to British Isles. Speaking about religious holidays one can’t but
mention Easter, Pancake Day and Mother’s Day. |
Kazakhstan is
an
independent Republic. Kazakhstan is an ancient and hospitable land,
which occupies a large part of Central Asia. On the eastern border of
Kazakhstan lies China. To the south lies its fraternal Republics –
Kyrgyzia, Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan, to the north and to the west lies
Russia. |
When you leave school
you
understand that the time of your independent life and the beginning of a
far more serious examination of your abilities and character has come.
You also understand that from now you’ll have to do everything by
yourself, and to "fight” with everybody around you for better life. |
What would I like to
become? This question worries me greatly. Every job has its
difficulties and interest. I think that all the professions are very
important. But to choose the right occupation is very difficult, because
we must take into consideration serious examinations we are going to
face. |
After my hard
and busy
school year my summer holidays began. I felt happy and began to plan a
lot of wonderful things to do during my summer vacation.

The English
are great
lovers of sport; and they are neither playing waching games,
they like to talk about them. However, there is an important thing
about sport in Britain which we must know. |
Five
Events that
Shaped the History of English
Philip Durkin, Principal
etymologist at the Oxford English Dictionary, chooses five events that
shaped the English Language.

I think, a
true friend is
someone who is always ready to help you and never hesitates to share
all your problems. It’s a person who never lets you down both in times
of joy and in times of sorrow. Of course, friendship is normally based
on something that makes two people want to be together. It can be common
interests or hobbies or simply two friends can be in one club or live
in the same street. The best friends should normally have much in common
or be of the same character or have the same habits. But very often
they just should like to be together. |
I think everyone can say
much about his family. In my opinion, a family can be characterized from
different angles: from the point of view of it’s size, from the point
of view of the relations among their members, from the point of view of
their quality of life and some other factors. So I think I’ll start with
the size of my family. |
A few words
about myself.
My name is Zhanna. I’m thirty-five. I’m a student of the International
Humanitarian-Economic Institute and I like studying here very much,
though it’s sometimes difficult as I already have a family of my own and
so I have a lot of responsibilities. |
Once upon a
time there
lived a Beast. He was a handsome man in his early twenties. Was he
short? No, he was a tall man. Was he overweight or on the contrary very
thin? No, the Beast was well built and sporty. What about his hair? He
had shoulder-length straight black hair. And his face was rather
attractive. |
Passengers are
requested
to arrive at the airport 2 hours before departure time. They must
register their tickets, weigh in and register the luggage. Most airports
have at least 2 classes of travel, first class and economy class, which
is cheaper. Each passenger of more than 2 years of age has free luggage
allowance. |
ALEC
ISSIGONIS was born
in 1906 in Izmir, Turkey. His mother was German and his father was Greek
with British citizenship. Issigonis didn’t go to school. He was taught
by a private teacher at home. After the First World War, the family
moved to Britain, and Issigonis studied engineering. |
Everybody can
fall ill
with any disease. Fortunately, only cold and flu are quite frequent in
our city among infectious illnesses. They are rather easy for the modern
medicine and various pills can help you a lot in overcoming this
trouble. But, of course, being sick isn’t a pleasant way of spending
your time. |
The world is
rich in
remarkable authors, but I think that Anton Pavlovich Chekhov was one of
the greatest authorities. He is my favourite writer. In my opinion, he
is the greatest Russian dramatist and short-story writer. I’m never
tired of reading and rereading his plays and humorous stories. |
The Oxford
Dictionary by
Hornby gives us the following definition of the notion "art”. "Art” is
the creation or expression of what is beautiful, especially in visual
form. Drawing, painting, sculpture, architecture, literature, music,
ballet belong to the fine art”. |
It is very
interesting to
travel. You can see other countries, continents; you get acquainted
with other people, their traditions and customs. You can travel by car,
by train, by air, by sea. |
Speaking
about art
galleries of Moscow we must mention the most famous galleries. The
State Tretyakov gallery is one of the best-known picture galleries in
Russia. It takes its name from its founder Pavel Tretyakov, a Moscow
merchant. |
Arthur Conan
Doyle was
born in the capital of Scotland, Edinburgh. His father, Charles E.
Doyle, was an artist and architect by profession, but he worked as a
clerk in an office. He died young and the Doyles were very poor. |
If we’ve
caught cold,
have a splitting headache, have a clogged nose, cough, are running high
temperature, we must go to the policlinic. First we come to the
registry. |
Here is a
story about a
terrible holiday. The first thing that went wrong was that the
country we were going to decided to have a war a few days before we were
going there. So that was the end of that. |
This is a
story of an old
woman who travelled in a van. She has traveled all over the world in
her tiny van. It's a nice way of having holiday. Now at this moment,
somewhere on the other side of the Atlantic, Olive Gibbs is probably
chugging along the road, in the early morning in her tiny camping van. |
God’s holiday

божественный праздник Jolly time – веселое время Smart –

The city is
the place
where all industrial cultural and educational centers are situated. In
big cities you can find museums, theaters, clubs, cinemas, big shops and
hospitals, comfortable modern flats. People try to live in cities
because all necessary objects are situated nearby. |
1. London is
the capital
of Great Britain and one of the greatest cities in the world. A visitor
going to London expects to see a giant city, but the real size of London
impresses even those who have been well informed. Greater London
territory covers an area of 720 square miles* and is twice as great as
the territory of New York, though its population is almost twice
smaller. |
I usually
take books from
school library. The library is helpful when I have to make a report,
when I need information on some subjects. The choice of books in our
school library is very good. There are many short stories and novels,
textbooks and reference books, dictionaries and encyclopedias there. |
I think we
can't live
without books. Books are with us during all our life. When I was a
child, my parents read me interesting books. I liked to listen stories
and tales. I like to read books about nature and animals. I like to get
presents for my birthday and I am happy if it is a book. |
